A Journey of Self-Care
As a therapist, I often find myself immersed in the well-being of others, dedicated to guiding individuals on their path to mental and emotional health. However, amidst the fulfilling yet demanding nature of my profession, I realise the importance of extending that same level of care to myself. Over the past year or so I embarked on a return to an old self-care friend, the floatation.
Here is a little of my most recent float experience at the start of February.
“The sensation of weightlessness enveloped me as I entered the floatation tank, a serene sanctuary where the worries of the world melted away. The warm water, saturated with Epsom salt, cradled my body effortlessly, creating an environment that allowed my mind to detach from the external chaos. In that tranquil cocoon, I found solace, and as the gentle lull of the water embraced me, the stresses of daily life seemed to dissipate.”
The benefits of floatation extend far beyond the physical realm. Emotionally, I felt a profound sense of relaxation and release. The sensory deprivation aspect of the experience allowed my mind to quieten, promoting introspection and mental clarity. It was like hitting the reset button for my psyche, leaving me feeling rejuvenated and ready to face the challenges that lay ahead. See below for further benefits of floatation.
As you may be aware I schedule regular holiday breaks into my routine, recognizing the importance of stepping away from the demands of work and day-to-day life. These breaks serve as essential pauses, allowing me to recharge both mentally and emotionally. Whether it's a weekend city break, a walk at Sutton Hoo or a leisurely beach getaway, these moments of respite provide a much-needed opportunity to reconnect with myself and nature.
During these breaks, I make a conscious effort to engage in activities that bring me joy and relaxation. Whether it's reading a book, practicing yoga, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, I prioritize activities that nourish my soul. This intentional self-care not only enhances my overall well-being but also strengthens my ability to empathise and support my clients.
The floatation experience and regular breaks have become integral components of my self-care toolkit, allowing me to cultivate a healthy balance between caring for others and nurturing the therapist within.
In conclusion, the journey of self-care is a personal and ongoing exploration, and as a therapist I owe it to my clients to prioritise my well-being. The fabulous floatation experience and the practice of regular holiday breaks have become cornerstones of my self-care routine, enabling me to continue providing compassionate and effective support to those who entrust me with their mental health journey. Remember, in order to care for others, we must first care for ourselves.
